Far in the future the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance are at war. Galactic empire high admiral Reinhard von Lohengramm raises through the ranks of the alliance, gaining political power for himself, gathering a large collection of loyal and skilled officers. Free navy admiral Yang Wen-li, a reluctant military man, rises through the ranks as he pulls off "miracles" in battle.

LotGH is a epic sci-fi which focuses on politics, grand strategy, strategy and interpersonal relationships of the characters.

The story was originally published as a series of novels in 1982-1987. It was first adapted to anime in 1988 (as a film) and then in 1988-1997 (as an OVA). It is being been adapted into an anime again as Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These. It has also been adapted into several games on PC and console (RTS), however these were only release in Japan.
